The club was founded in 1904. The course was designed
initially by Jack Rowe, the professional at nearby Royal Ashdown, with
later contributions from the great JH Taylor, member of the famous “triumvirate”
and multiple winner of The Open. Between them they created something
special, a course unlikely ever to host a major tournament, but one
which is, to quote a report from European Golf Design, “comfortable,
familiar and really rather good.”
It was built on Piltdown Common, and part of it borders the beautiful
lake known as Piltdown Pond. There are no sand bunkers, but most of
us reckon the heather, gorse, trees and bracken provide challenge enough.
