Golf Club - Affectionately
known as “Sham Castle” by the locals, the course earned
its nick-name from the neighbouring architectural folly Sham Castle.
The ‘castle’ stands in a field adjoining the course and
although appearing to be the entrance gate to an impressive baronial
hall, is in fact nothing more than a single wall.
Bath Golf Club, established in 1880, has one of England’s finest and oldest inland courses. The 18 hole, 6505 yard, par 71 course may not be the length that today’s course designers favour, but in the 1880s they knew how to create a challenge using the natural contours of a hilltop location. The course is full of variety and is laid out over fine “golfing country”. Springy downland turf over shallow soil and limestone ensures rapid draining and the course is usually found to be in superb condition. |
